About Loans Halifax

Loans Halifax is a free loan connection service for people who work on either side of Halifax Harbour and in the communities within about thirty miles, from Spryfield and the North End across the bridges to Cole Harbour and up Highway 102 to Elmsdale. It puts a payday loan and an installment loan side by side under Nova Scotia law and sends one application to lenders that hold a Nova Scotia permit. We never lend, and the borrower never pays us.

What this site is

Loans Halifax explains two loan products in dollars and carries one apply link. A payday loan runs from $100 to $1500, costs no more than $14 per $100 and is repaid in one debit on your next pay date, at most 62 days after the money arrives. An installment loan runs from $500 to $10000 at 18% to 35% APR and is repaid monthly over 3 to 60 months.

The gap decides which one fits. A power bill that lands five days before a provincial deposit is a one paycheque problem and belongs on the payday page. An oil tank in a Fairview bungalow, a generator after a September storm or a tour boat crew's lean months between the last cruise ship in October and the first sailing in May outlast any pay period and belong with the installment page.

How we earn money

A lender pays Loans Halifax a referral fee after a loan that started at our apply link has funded, and that fee is the only money the site takes in. The borrower pays us nothing, the fee does not raise the $14 per $100 or the APR, and nothing is paid on a declined application or on a payday loan cancelled inside the window Nova Scotia allows.

Because we are paid on loans that fund, every page tells you to ask for the amount one deposit can carry rather than the largest figure the law permits. The referral disclosure sets out the arrangement.

About Loans Halifax, Halifax

Who runs it

Loans Halifax is owned by an independent Canadian publisher that runs a small number of local loan guides, and the Loans Halifax Editorial Team writes and checks every page. No one on the team lends, brokers or advises, and no lender reads a page before it is published. The facts come from the Consumer Protection Act, the Payday Lenders Regulations, the Province's consumer pages, the orders of the Nova Scotia Regulatory and Appeals Board and the federal criminal interest rate. There are no reviews or testimonials here; we have not borrowed from these lenders and will not invent people who have.

The Nova Scotia rules every page follows

Every page is read against this list before it goes up and again whenever the Act, the regulations or an order of the Board changes.

  • A payday loan costs at most $14 per $100, a cap the Board has held since January 1, 2025. $300 costs $42 and $342 comes back; over 14 days that works out to about 365% APR.
  • The ceiling is $1500 and 62 days. Lenders size a loan to the pay deposits they can see, which is why a first loan usually lands between $100 and $500.
  • Repayment is one debit on your next pay date. A lender cannot open a second payday loan while you hold one with it, cannot roll a loan into a new one and cannot charge a fee for paying early.
  • You can cancel at no cost by the end of the business day after you receive the money, in writing and by returning the money. For a loan arranged online the window is 48 hours after the advance lands.
  • If a payment is missed, the penalty is capped at $20 and the interest on the overdue balance at 30% a year.
  • Nova Scotia has no mandatory extended payment plan, so no page here will say a third loan earns you one. If a payment will be short, call the lender before the due date and ask for an extension at interest only; Service Nova Scotia takes complaints when a lender breaks a rule.
  • Every payday lender, online lenders included, holds a Payday Lender Permit issued through Service Nova Scotia, and a permit is not an endorsement.
  • Installment and personal lending sits under the federal 35% ceiling, and the age of majority is 19.
  • Halifax is described as it is: provincial and federal pay every second week, shipyard shifts in the North End, hospital rotations on both sides of the harbour and an oil fill in the middle of nor'easter season.
About Loans Halifax, Halifax

What we are not

Loans Halifax is not a lender and holds no Payday Lender Permit, because a permit attaches to a lender and we lend to nobody. We never ask for a bank login, a pay stub or identification; the application platform behind the apply button collects those, and every lender on it holds its own Nova Scotia permit. The Province's page on payday loans and your rights sets out what a permitted lender owes you and how to complain when one falls short.

The site is an online service with no staffed office in Halifax, Dartmouth or anywhere else. Everything happens on a phone: on the Alderney ferry, on a bus pulling into the Bridge Terminal, in a break room at the shipyard or at a kitchen table in Clayton Park. The contact page explains how to write to us, how applying works covers the three steps, and the FAQ picks up the rest.

How Loans Halifax makes money: loanshalifax.ca is a free loan connection service, not a lender. When you apply, we match your application with licensed Canadian lenders and earn a referral fee from the lender if your loan funds. This never changes your rate or costs you anything. We do not make credit decisions and never charge borrowers. The lender sets and discloses the cost before you sign; payday fees are capped by provincial law and installment loans run 18% to 35% APR. All lending is subject to lender approval and provincial rules.
